Kitsune & Classic American Style

August 5th, 2008

kitsune.jpgIts hard to find a small, independent, clothing label that is producing classic, timeless style. Modern Amusement comes close… but I hate the way its run as a company, their clothing tends to be a little on the fad side, and the quality/materials vs price is lacking. Last week I discovered Kitsune, first enticed by the very french, very sexy, models they use in their ads, I decided to take a closer look. FANTASTIC COMPANY. Heres the kicker; its run by a Japanese guy who moved to France and started the label. But thats not all, the style that he is working with is all Classic American Prep, something which I have always had an affinity to - most likely through exposure. Truly classic American clothing, much like that previously produced by Brooks Brothers, and still produced by J. Press, never goes out of style, unlike most of the trend-conscious clothing passed off in Malls and Macy’s.  Kitsune’s clothing is hard to come by, as only a select few places in the US actually sell the stuff, but its worth looking into if you live in NY. You’re basically getting the best of three worlds here, Japanese design, American style, and all on a French label. Keep it up Kitsune.

The best political apparel item

Snag one of these before they sell out, I think the concept was stolen from the Daily Show…  or KXCD Cartoons… but regardless, it’s still a solid joke.

‘Anonymously’ Confronting Scientology: A Break Down of The Anonymous Group From A Fairly Neutral Bystandar

July 9th, 2008

I was browsing the internet super high way yesterday when I ran into a video, which subsequently led to dozens of other videos, on youtube concerning Scientology, a fad religion, and Anonymous, a fad cause. This was not the first time I was confronted by the ‘group name, nor was it the first video I watched concerning Scientology. The original ‘anonymous group’ video can be found below:

Straying away from the terribly composed video, that no doubt in my mind was produced by a high schooler at best, I was interested and so I did some more browsing. The next video on my list was one posted by a girl and created with some sort of slide-show website. The content deals uniformly with celebrities that should be boycotted because of their religions affiliations to scientology, no matter how miniscule (sounds like Nazi Germany). When I saw Beck on the list I flipped, and immediately posted a response correcting the video’s poster; Beck is not a practicing Scientologist, he was raised Scientologist and now considers himself an atheist, if even that. She deleted the comment I had left under the video (censorship - something Scientology is condemned for).Advancing from this video, I think that Scientology will eventually fail (I give it another 10-15 years). Why? Because it has become too commercial, it is promoting itself with from the 1980s, while L. Ron was still living, and Scientology does nothing to gain brand (which it basically is) credibility. Anonymous is simply giving people who were already opposed to the religion an anonymous outlet; I have no respect for this, if you have something to say you can say it without the computerized voice ‘Boris’ embedded behind a slideshow. Lets grow up.I actually did some covert reporting on the religion back in the day for A&M, if you want to hear those episodes then just do a search for ’scientology’ in the right hand search box.

The Return of the Wristwatch

March 26th, 2008

A much needed revival: the wristwatch. I know, “we can just get the time from our mobile phones, why do we need something on our wrist.” Aside from connivence - I believe the wrist watch as a symbol - you don’t have the time to get out your cell phone and check out the time - you need something faster. What sort of watch to get? A vintage Waltham or Timex affixed to a grosgrain band. For the grosgrain (a sort of cloth) watch band check out Central Watch, for the vintage watch face ask Daddy if he has an old one - or check your local antique store / eBay. Jump on board - a watch is not only useful - its a symbol of style, prestige, and importance.  520002575_a458c884fc.jpg

LifeTime’s How to Look Good Naked, or Fatties Fatties Everywhere: A review

January 24th, 2008

There are quite a few fat people in america… and by quite a few I mean its an epidemic. ‘Why?’ would be the next logical question one might ask. Because shows like ‘How to Look Good Naked’ throw up there arms right beside Oprah and Mo’ Nique and say ‘Be a disgusting slop, and love yourself for it!’ I would like to tell you that it is not okay to be fat. It is a health problem which CAN be corrected through a healthy diet and exercise (maybe get off couch, turn off all those daytime shows appealing to fatties and do a lap around the block - then you would not only look better naked but you would be healthier). America is the most obese country because we encourage obesity - we set social boundaries and claim making fun of a porker is as improper as making fun of a handicap(able?) person. No. It’s not. Humor is humor if the person can change the characteristic that is being made fun of - if they are missing a leg then don’t joke - in fact you deserve a punch in the face if you do - however if they look like they have an extra five legs then by all means whip out your best quip and then tell them they are weighing down our country. Give it a few years and we will be underwater.   I say we end this absurd sensitivity that our country is developing. If someone is fat say it. They are not ‘curvaceous’ they are unhealthy. They will die sooner. Tell them, it will do them much better then being touchy about the issue. Humph. 2662big.jpg
